Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The people I work with'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I am a caregiver because it is in my blood. I was my stepdad's primary caregiver from when I was 17 until he passed away due to complications with Parkinson's diseas when I was 26. I also helped my mother care for my brother, whom had severe cerebral palsy from birth. Caregiving is not just my passion. It is my life.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'I had a client who lived with his sister. The sister was having terrible pains one day and really needed me to drive her to the doctor. I contacted my supervisor and explained the situation. They sent some one to look after my client while I drive the sister to the doctor myself. She wasn't my client but she needed my help and had no one else. So I figured out a way to do it without compromising the client.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My grandpa was the most amazing man I have ever known. He taught me compassion, honesty, and integrity. He volunteered for senior communities, as museums, and political events. He was a success entrepreneur. He loved people and people loved him. He had a presence of authority but wore his heart on his sleeve. I try to be like him as much as possible. But he would tell me to just be me.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'Some of my best memories are going to base ball games every summer and to the ballet every Christmas to see The Nutcracker Suit. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I believe that good communication is key in caregiving. It is very important in a community. I personally feel it is even more important for in home care. In the home our clients only have one of us at a time. Not a whole team of six or more at once. If anything new happens I need to know asap. I like constant communication through call, text, or email so that I am always up to date on my clients. Also, as much information about any new clients as possible before meeting them helps a lot. I hate going in blind. However, I am capable and confident when that does happen.'
