Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I am a caregiver because I love working with seniors. The stories they have to tell and the time that they spend with you and the advice they want to give (even if it’s the same one over and over because of dementia/etc) makes me smile. Knowing that they feel like they can help make a difference in someone’s life and that I am able to help make their life more comfortable. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'In my last position, a resident was yelling and yelling for someone to come help him. He had to go to the bathroom, but the caregivers were not helping him. I had come in for a personal care for another resident and because no one was doing anything I walked over and helped him to the bathroom, he just wanted the help, even if he asked 50 times that day already, he hadn’t to go, he can’t just sit all day waiting and develop a uti. So I helped him to the bathroom and came back to my resident so he could have that help that no one else was giving him. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My papa (grandpa) was always there for us as kids. He was always there willing to help us with anything, always smiling, laughing and showing us new things. I feel like because he was always so happy and helpful it made us want to learn more and more with him. Even as he was going through Alzheimer’s he was teaching us the same things all over again. We cared for him in our home and made sure he was cared for the way he cared for us. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'He would always tell us about how rebellious he was as a kid. “I’d go in the front door of the school and straight out the back door!” But would always tell us that it was important and that we needed to learn as much as we could.

Another memory is traveling all summer with him. We would be in the motorhome and driving down the road reading till we got to a stop and then we would have a break and go again. We went all over the states with him each summer it was amazing. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'For me a supervisor who cares about their employees and clients is one of the best things. I have disabilities that make it hard for me to do some things sometimes, which is why I have a service dog. So someone who understands that he is there as my “medical equipment” and not just a dog. Understanding and supportive supervisors make life a lot easier. '
