Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have always had an emotional connection to help people who are vulnerable or rely on the effort of care, independence and support given by another. I once was at the mercy of nurses, caregivers and a healthcare system. I learned independence and grew up very quickly. I had loving individuals who choose to walk alongside me despite my traumatic past. Caregivers that went above and beyond to help me succeed in life. That image of Grace when I was old enough to understand was so powerful. Helping others because they need someone; not because I get paid, a reputation I receive or I was told to. I was anxious and excited to become a caregiver. I worked hard for me CNA certificate and still was recovering from some of my own health issues at the time. My personal aids were there every step of the way to support me.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'While Working as a private security provider I was patrolling an executive office build when I came across an individual who was extremely distressed. Standing on the roof of a 31 story building debating life. I was able to slowly and calmly stand next to her. Thinking before I spoke I was able to use little words to show love and care. I couldn't relate to her situation and I didn't have a magic solution, but I saw someone in need. Someone who felt no love saw no hope at the moment. An hour later they were sitting in a soft light lobby laughing and venting about life enjoying a cup of coffee. I was able to drive her to the Hospital myself were help and encouragement was given. She returned to work grateful for what I had done a week late. I am not one to break rules or risk my own or someone else's life due to impulsive decisions. In the moment of this situation, I felt this person needed me to treat them like a humane, bring reality back and show them love. Not a Calvery of EMS units and a stressful night possibly making the feelings worse and the drama higher. I hope to never run into this type of decision again and can't imagine my self acting the same way. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'Growing up I had a neighbour named Ezra. A college kid who every so often babysat me if my nanny was out of town. When I reached middle school Ezra asked if he could pick me up after school a few days a week and take me places like skiing, rock climbing and swimming. This was huge because even though I didn't realize it at the time this is when I needed someone the most to mentor me through life. Be a father figure and relate to and answer those oh so difficult questions we have as a 13-year-old. As we went along our adventures he would hear the pros and cons of life and support me through all of it. Little to my knowledge at the time this was all him using his free time to support a young kid he saw potential in. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'Ezra Chaperone a school overnight field trip. We went to the desert and found thunder eggs.

Ezra took me to a father-son woodworking retreat I was interested in as a child; in my home town of Eugene, OR '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'Getting to know me on a personal level. Not being a distant management service I have to track down when there is a problem.

Providing a thorough shadowing experience where my questions are answered at the end of the day. I would like to be confident and comfortable my first day alone so I can provide the best care to my clients and already know their routine.
