Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I like care giving, because I want to show love and kindness to people who are in need physically, emotionally, or simply lonely. I enjoy listening to the stories of their lives. I want to bring some sunshine, with a smile. All people need, a little encouragement, and company. I feel happy if I've helped them have a better day.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

' I will tell you about an event that happened when I had the privilege of caring for a very special lady, named Neoma. She was 92 years old, very sweet, a widow, and the mother of 5 children. We hit it off, right away. I also, being a mother of 5 children. I would come over to her house and visit with her while I fixed her breakfast, and helped her with her daily tasks, of taking her blood pressure, weighing her, making sure she took her daily medications, and other household chores. Our routine, was always the same, she would open the door for me, and we would visit, while she ate, and I did my other tasks. Well, one day, she didn't open the door for me. She left the door unlocked, so I found her in bed, sweaty, scared, disoriented, and complaining of chest pains. I calmed her, and assessed her physical condition, and immediately called 9ll for assistance. I held her hand, and comforted her, telling her help was on the way. She didn't want me to leave her, so I stayed with her, until the paramedics arrived. I then, called the nurse care manager, for the company I worked for, and let her know about the situation that had occurred. I told her, that Neoma wanted me to stay with her until her family came to the hospital. She instructed me to go with her, and to notify her family. I notified her family, and they met her at the hospital. She was taken care of there and survived. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'One of the most meaningful people in my life while I was growing up, had to be my mother. She was a good example of showing care for my brother and I by teaching us how to take care of ourselves and others. She taught us how to care for our bodies, our home, and to show love and respect for others. She would teach us how to cook, clean, shop, visit relatives who were in nursing homes, make gifts for our grandmothers, and take us to church. My mother, is special, because she cares, and has been there for me in my own trials and tribulations, to give an encouraging word. I am very thankful to God for her in my life.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'My mother took time out of her busy life to help teach folk dances to our girl scout troop, to help my troop and myself earn our dancing badge.
My mother also worked a full time job, and would take the time and teach me how to sew on the sewing machine, bake, can fruits and vegetables, and would do extra cleaning jobs at the dance studio, to pay for tap dancing lessons for me.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I think it is good to smile, be positive, informative, and an encouraging word goes a long way.'
