Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I enjoy caregiving because it makes a real difference in the lives of my clients. I enjoy making people happy and helping them meet their goals. I believe my work helps people live life to the fullest and brings them joy and a real sense of independence on a daily basis, which is a huge part of having being mentally healthy.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'My grandmother is 69 years old. Her health issues began when she was born with having to spend a significant amount of time in a body cast. She has several diagnoses. I have helped her maintain healthy house/outdoor plants, decorate for holidays, with her unexpected bouts of depression, and transportation to and from medical appointments and to pick up medication. In these ways, I've seen how happy and healthy she can be when she feels that she can depend on somebody. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'When I was 7 years old I was enrolled in "The Big Brother/Big Sister" program through the YMCA where I met my "big sister" Kristina. She was a friend when I needed it and an excellent role model. She helped me through the hardships of growing up and was a dependable confidant. 22 years later her and I live far from each other but still correspond regularly and have watched each other have children and get married. We consider each other sisters. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'One of my favorite memories is when I was having a hard time at home, as a teenager, getting along with my mother, I called Kristina to talk with her. She came to my house and got my mothers permission to take me on a surprise trip for the weekend. We went to the beach and got a hotel room and watched movies, went shopping and went for a late night walk on the beach together. Another memory was when I was much younger, we had a movie night together at her house. We went to the store and got a bunch of candy and watched movies together and had a sleep over. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'It is important for me to have thorough training on policies and a clear understanding of what is expected of me. Having opportunities to ask questions, earn rewards, and being supportive continuing education will create a supportive and positive work experience for me.'
