Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I started caregiving at a very young age helping my mom take care of my uncle after he fell sick with Neurofibromatosis types 1 & 2. I won’t lie, I complained a lot. I was a young girl & didn’t want to do any of it. But it grew on me & made me feel good that I was able to help my uncle as he couldn’t do anything for himself anymore. I helped my mom with quite a few family members when they fell ill while she worked her second job. I eventually followed in her steps & started working in facilities. Eventually I want to go for my CNA license as this is the field I feel I was meant to be in. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else then helping take care of people. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'I had a resident at my last caregiving job who had such a rough time with everyone taking care of her. She yelled a lot. At this certain time, she was agitated and very tired but wouldn’t relax to fall asleep. She was worried and agitated about something that she couldn’t keep her mind off of. I sat next to her, held her hand, and let her know I was there and not to worry about anything. Relax. It slowly put her mind at ease. A lot of caregivers didn’t have much patience with her. You could honestly hear her yelling a mile down the road 90% of the time. Non-stop yelling. Since then, I always sat with her and interacted with her and although she couldn’t communicate with me how she felt, I knew she appreciated me being there just by her being able to relax. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My uncle Cole. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'Although he was sick & couldn’t do much, he always made life better. He was more than just my uncle, my best friend growing up.

He was determined to have me help him into his wheelchair so that way he could take my siblings & I outside to enjoy a snow day.

He loved rock & roll, he always had something playing & loved rocking out with my mom & I. Although he couldn’t hear the music that much, or sometimes at all, he still made it such a fun time. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'Communication from the people I work for is a huge thing for me. I’ve worked in a lot of places where management were very poor at communication. It made working for them hard. '
