Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I love making a difference in someone else’s life. To know I can provide companionship, a ear for a voice so that’s it is heard, and comfort in sometimes uncomfortable situations, is very rewarding to me.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

' My father, who I was not close with as a child, came to live with me. We were able to bond and re-connect the last two and a half years of his life. I helped him administer the many medications he had to take. I helped him with doctor appointments at the VA. We talked a lot, we played cribbage, and just being there for him in his time of need was really priceless to me.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My mother was the most meaningful person to me growing up. She was a single parent with a full time job and two children to raise. She spent time reading to me, answering all my questions, making me dinner, all after a long work day. She had patience and was very understanding. She took the time to listen to me.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'I have thousands of beautiful memories with my mother. I remember camping trips, Christmas gifts, her holding and comforting me in times of need. I remember one time when I was seven years old, a friend of mine and I came across a box of five kittens that needed a home. We ended up taking all of them, but my friends mom would not let her have any of them so I brought them all to my house (I already had two cats and a dog). She wasn’t very pleased. I was going to go visit my dad in two days and I begged her to keep them untiI I got back, which she did. Bless her heart.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I would say just to be there to answer any questions I may have so that I can do the best job possible. Also, feedback on the job I am doing would be very welcome.'
