Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have been a caregiver for most of my life. I work in this field because I have a passion to others that are in need of care and love. I have many years experience working with all backgrounds of all ages with all different levels of special needs. It brings me great joy when I go home at night knowing that I made a difference in someone's life. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'If you were to ask my family and friends, they would tell you that I would give you the shirt off my back if you needed it. I am the go to person for many people in my life. A time that I was really there for someone was a few years ago when my old high school friend was very ill and was preparing to die. He didn't have much family, so I would go and help on my time off. I was able to inform his family of what the final steps were going to be and how to prepare for them. I spent a lot of my time with him just making sure he was comfortable and that his last wishes were known. It was a very bittersweet experience for me because I know that I was able to help in ways that allowed his love ones to just be with him and not stress over his care. On the other hand, it was sad to see someone you cared that ill. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My mother without a doubt the most meaningful person to me growing up. She was a caring and loving person and we were very close. I knew that whatever I was going through, she would have understanding for me. She supported me in whatever choices I made and never judged me. When she became ill a couple years ago, I became her caretaker. It brought us even closer together and taught me a lot about life.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'One of the earlier memories I have of my mother that we still do to this day is camping/boating. Throughout the year we would load of the whole family, dogs included and go camping or boating. We had such a great time taking all the kids and having family time together. We would swim all day and play games by the campfire at night. A tradition my kids carried on to this day.

Another memory I have of her is Christmas. Christmas day was always at her house and the whole family would come. My family is about 50 people. The house was always home to friends and friends of the family members. We would hang out from morning to night playing games, eating and just having fun. One Christmas, she had a great idea to hang ornaments from her ceiling about 5 inches apart. I took us all day to pin those ornaments up but it was well worth it. To see the look on everyone's face, especially the small children. My mother kept those ornaments up for weeks because she loved looking at them with all the Christmas lights bouncing off them. It always bring a smile to my face when I think about it. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'A supportive and positive work experience for me is where everyone is working as a team with the same goal in mind. I think having that positive vibe with everything you do makes the day go by soother. I don't except to have a good day everyday but having a team I can rely on or go to for help makes the bad days not so bad.'
