Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The people I work with'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'Because I feel that I am good with people, understanding them and making them feel comfortable, and I enjoy meeting new people and helping them on their journeys.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'Not long ago, in the early hours, my daughter called, which was unusual as she's not up that early, but she was having a health issue, and was home alone. Not just being her mother, as I would have done it for any friend I have, but I asked what she needed immediately, and got several items from the store, and spent the day with her, monitoring her situation until she felt well enough to be alone.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My Grandma Holland. She had a feed, garden and pet supply store for many years in Beaverton, and I loved spending time there when the flowers and plants for spring planting were there. She was very hands on, and I think I learned a lot and found my own love of gardening from her. Some of my happiest memories as a child, are from the family functions at Grandma and Grandpa Holland's house. Cousins, food and family.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'I can remember watching her pick the dried up flowers off the plants, and I didn't realize at first what she was doing, so when I asked her, she said it's to help the new flowers to grow-if they're drying up, they're done, so they must be pinched off the plant. She was not large in stature, and I never heard her raise her voice, but the "look" and the tsk tsk sound if you did wrong, were worse than getting yelled at. I saw two of my male cousins, who had been doing the brotherly squabbling, literally shrink when Grandma caught them and gave them the look and sound.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I think that the communication from the office is most important to people out in the field so to speak, and I think that is one of the most important things an employer can do. An open door policy I believe, is important and shows employees that the people in the office are human and approachable.'
