Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I've had some experience care giving and as soon as it began, I knew it was something very unique and special. I want to continue this work for many reasons, but the main reason is the self gratification I feel when I help a patient. Helping someone with the little and big tasks throughout their day is so rewarding because you begin to build a bond with that individual. It is such a great feeling knowing that you are helping someone in any way that you can. I've always been a person who likes to take care of others. Growing up, my absence of a mother had a large impact on my two younger sisters and I. I took the role my mother left behind and started caring for my siblings. Even though it can be stressful at times, taking care and watching out for someone else's well being is something I have always been drawn towards and had a passion for. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'A few months ago my sister got out of an abusive relationship. For days she stayed in her room, unable to leave her bed due to depression. I had never seen her in such pain before and I knew that I couldn't leave her side. For days and weeks I tended to her, getting her food, talking to her, making sure she didn't sink deeper into depression or feel as if she had nobody. I knew she needed someone more than anything at this point and I wanted to be there for her. Soon enough I got her out of the house and running errands with me to get her back into the swing of getting her life back to normal. Seeing her like that made me extremely sad but I helped her in every way I could. Seeing her progress and how she has evolved and grown as a person since then has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'The most meaningful person in my life growing up, was my dad. What made my father so special, was that he never left me on my own. No matter where I was, or what I needed, he was always there. Even though my mother was not always present, my dad always was. He would help me with everything that went on in my life weather it be school, work, or relationships. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'I remember when I was very sick and had to miss class, my dad took care of me the whole day. I remember he was there to rub my back while I was in pain and he was there to give me medicine and bring me food. He would bring me ginger ale and yellow Gatorade. Even though he was very busy that day with prior obligations and work, he somehow still found the time to make sure I got the care that I needed. My father is someone I will always look up to because he is someone that puts others needs above his own. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'The best work environment is one that I can feel comfortable in. Making sure that I have all the tools I need in order to do my job properly, is very important. I want to be able to feel like I can work and not have to worry about things that do not pertain to the job. '
