Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have always been driven toward caregiving, even as a child. Taking care of people, especially those with disabilities, has always been my passion. It makes me feel good to know that I am improving someone's quality of life.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'When I was in eighth grade, one of my friends was really depressed and had said some things that were really worrisome to me. She started ignoring my messages and calls for a few hours, and I was very worried, so I called her mom. Her mom found her attempting suicide and took her to the hospital. She was mad at me for a while, but we became even closer after that.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'I met Jeremy in junior high. He had cerebral palsy, was nonverbal, and used a wheelchair. After being friends at church for about a year, his mom asked me to come over once or twice a week and take care of him while she went out for a couple of hours. It was the best caregiving job I've ever had. Jeremy was always so much fun. He was so positive and had the best smile, even though by all means he had every reason to be unhappy. He was the best friend I've ever had.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'When I was a senior in high school, I was taking care of Jeremy at his house when a TV commercial for Disneyland came on. He got so excited and pointed at the commercial. I asked him if he wanted to go, and he indicated yes. So I got a group of friends together and took Jeremy to Disneyland, just us kids. We transferred him on and off of every ride we could and had the time of our lives. He had such a huge smile all day. He aways pointed out Disneyland things to me after that and wanted to talk about our trip.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I do best in an environment where I am encouraged. I often do not think I am doing a good job unless someone tells me otherwise.'
