Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The people I work with'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I began studying Hospice when I was in my first years of college. I volunteered at Cascade AIDS Project, and Southwest Washington hospice. I begin helping an elderly couple in their home by running errands and doing their housework. I also became a teachers assistant in children’s world centers. In 1998 my dad passed away and my mother was uncomfortable being alone. She couldn’t sleep anymore. I moved in and started helping take care of her. Into thousand 15 she fell and broke a bone in her leg. I became a caregiver through the Oregon home care program. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'This week, the family I work for who has a Parkinson’s patient couldn’t find people to cover the hours that were needed this week. Even though I had to work in two different households twice a day I covered those hours so that Al could get to the bathroom and into bed and follow his care regimen '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'When I was growing up my step brother was really important to me he showed me that you could be different and artistic and that you didn’t have to do what everyone else was doing. There were other special people to like Mr. Keenan who showed me that I could do math, and that I could be an architect and a drafter. Also, Barbara Edwards of Lane Community college help me get through algebra.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'I remember that my step brother treated me like I should be able to special and important things like he did.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I like using I messages and good communication and avoiding unclarified expectations at all cost. I like hands-on training where I can see the work done the way you people need it to be and then try it for myself.'
