Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The people I work with'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I want to become a caregiver to make a difference in people's lives. I want the work I do to make a difference and help others. The reward of seeing a client smile because I helped them is priceless to me. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'My mom had an elderly friend Ellen, who didn't have any family around. We invited her to spend holidays with us and to join us on special occasions. Ellen was vibrant and full of life. She was always up for an adventure and was one of the most funny people I have ever met. You couldn't be around Ellen without having a huge smile on your face. She always lit up a room! One weekend I was back in Ohio visiting my parents when my Mom received the call that Ellen didn't seem herself and needed some help. My Mom and I rushed over to her house to find her very confused and disoriented. We both knew immediately something wasn't right. We rushed her to the hospital where we waited with her for hours to be evaluated. Ellen was so tired and she was crying and said she was scared. All I could do was hold her hand and reassure her she was going to be ok. We eventually learned Ellen had a stroke that day. She did partially recover but within a year of that stroke she passed away from other complications. Although she didn't have much family and most were several hours away, we were always there as her "adopted" family.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My Mom was most meaningful to me. She taught me to be kind, thoughtful, caring, strong, and to work hard. My Mom always went out of her way to help people and to do special things to show people how much she cared. She was often the one who would do kind things without anyone even knowing. She never looked for praise or to get credit for her actions, she would just do because it was the right thing to do. I always looked up to Mom because she was so generous, kind and an amazing person. I'm blessed to be her daughter! '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'My Mom had a sister that had a difficult life and she was a single Mom of two kids and didn't really have anyone to take care of her. My Aunt didn't have a lot of money and was too prideful to take any handouts. At Christmas time it was the worst because my Aunt spent all he money to buy for the kids and there was no one to buy for her. My Mom knew she wouldn't accept any gifts or handouts so every year at Christmas, my mom and I would go and shop for my Aunt and buy her cloths, toiletries, and house hold items. My mom would wrap each one and send them in a huge box to my Aunt from her secret admirer. I loved to hear my aunt talk about the mysterious box each year and try to guess who could possibly be sending this stuff. My mom and I would just smile an play along like we didn't know. My mom continued until my aunt passed away several years ago.

My favorite memory with my Mom is during my Son's baptism. He was baptized on Mother's day weekend so it was already special. It was just an amazing day to watch her face and see how proud she is of her only grandson. That was a special memory.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I like to stay connected and to receive feedback so I know if I'm doing a good job or not. I like voice to voice contact or face to face contact. '
