Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I currently care for infants and have cared for children for over a decade. I find personal gratification in providing help, observing and thinking of ways to encourage independence, teaching in various forms, and interacting on an emotional level. My grandfather had a nurse who would come into the home and help during his final years of life. I'm curious as to my impact and my personal ability to fill a similar role in someone else's life. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'My friend was going through a tough time mentally, had recently lost a family pet, and was on the verge of suicide. I was available via text, would go to her home since she wasn't comfortable leaving, and would encourage/invite her to various activities outside of the home with gentle pressure while respecting her personal boundaries of self care. This was a long term kind of a care but I pride myself on my availability both physically and emotionally. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My parents. They were and have always been there for me, present, emotionally available, communicative, and supportive. It was as if I had quiet cheerleaders behind me my whole upbringing. They helped me believe in my own independence and in turn, made me realize how I couldn't do it without them. Our memories and time together are my favorite... we would eat dinner together every night and then sit around the table with dirty dishes just talking. I would like to bring that into someone else's home and incorporate companionship into an independent approach. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'With my mother... I remember us talking and driving in the car listening to music. She was laughing and I was singing loudly.
My father... We both wake up early and have spent many mornings talking, going on early hikes, or just driving around. We can talk or be quiet and both are as fulfilling as the other. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'Knowledge is power so I appreciate knowing all of my resources and peer collaboration: more brains are better than one! I also appreciate feedback and words of encouragement. '
