Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have always worked in the corporate world, and the customer service field. I am looking for a career that has more meaning to me. I want to make a difference in someones life. How ever small that may be.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'My mom passed away from kidney disease about four years ago, I was single, and my children were grown. I moved in with my mom, and step-dad to help care for her, and assist them with whatever they needed. I still worked full time, and I was there to cook, clean, run errands, whatever they needed.
I feel blessed to have been able to do that.
My son Zach was diagnosed with a rare tissue cancer when he was 19, it had been about a week since we had learned of the diagnosis. During that time I was employed full time at Spartan Stores. They had a company wide restructure, and every department had to cut employees by a certain percent. My position was eliminated based on my seniority of nine years. It was a blessing in disguise. My son needed all of his care, including chemotherapy, and surgery at U of M in Ann Arbor. I was able to care for him during this time, which ended up being about a year. Another blessing in disguise.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My mom, and my step-dad. My step dad came into my life when I was 13 years old. He was the dad I needed. He was always there for me, and my entire family. My mom was someone that I could always count on to help with my children, someone I could confide in. Someone that always had my back.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'My step-dad was a person that had to be doing something all the time, and they have an old church house on the property that was full of junk. Over the course of an entire summer, we cleaned the church house out, I organized a garage sale for what ever we could salvage. We painted the inside, and the family still uses that church house to hold family gatherings. We even had a wedding there about two years ago. It was a great bonding experience for me.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I believe that honest communication is very important, to be able to discuss any challenges at work, and to be able to have a conversation regarding solutions. Asking questions, something as simple as checking in every week.'
