Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have a sweet spot for my elders. I took care of my grandma the last few years of her life and enjoyed every moment. She lived in a senior community and it broke my heart that there were so many people there that didn't have people visit or care for them. My grandma and I enjoyed making others in her comminity feel loved. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'Again, it would be my grandma. She had congestive heart failure and kidney failure. I took her and picked her up 3 times a week from dialysis along with other doctor appointments. I would take her to the grocery store help her make meals that would be little work for the week. I also cleaned her apartment once a week as well. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My grandma would definitely be the most meaningful person in my life. My mother was young when she had me, my grandma raised me. I am so thankful for her guidance and influence in my life. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'One memory would be our last day together. Around the beginning of every month we would go out to lunch together and she would share stories of her life with me. I always found this so intriguing because the times of the world were so different than from what I experienced.

My second memory would be our long walks to find treasures in the woods. Our "treasure" consisted of things like huge unique leaves, awesome walking sticks and other fun things. She taught me to appreciate the little things and nature. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'What I have found helpful is when co-workers have positive attitudes. We "get" to work instead of I "have" to work attitude. Also I am a firm believer in words of affirmation. If I feel appreciated in what I am doing it always encourages me. '
