Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The changes I can accomplish'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I have been a caregiver ever-since I was a teenager when I took care of my grandma following a hip surgery. I worked in acute hospitals as a CNA for 5 years while going to occupational Therapy school. I graduated in 2008 and my job is still care giving. I am presently taking care of a sick family member at home.

I enjoy helping others and if I can make a difference in their life, then that makes me feel good. I always feel that if it were me or my family member who is not able to help myself/themself, how would I want it. I want the best help for myself and therefore I give the best to others.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'I have been there many a time for patients, ordinary people and family members that really needed me. This one particular incident happened while driving on the road when this elderly gentleman lost control of his vehicle and got off the road and hit a tree. In a quick second, I found myself including other motorists that stopped dragging this poor guy out of his car, applied first aid to stop bleeding and I was on the phone calling 911. In the shortest possible time the poor guy was taken to the hospital.

What came as a surprise to me was the reactionary time and I was able to quickly park my car on the side walk to quickly attend to the accident scene.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'MY parents and grandparents were always there for comfort level, whether I was sick, unhappy or happy.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'During a therapy session, one of my patients did not feel like doing therapeutic exercises. I stopped the exercise program, sat down side by side with her, held her hand and asked if there was something bothering her. She then opened up a very personal problem to me. I was not able to offer solutions since it was a family problem but just taking time to listen, gave a hug helped this patient relax and she thanked me and stated that she feels much better letting it out of her chest'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'By being open to get a two way feedback from the client and from me as well. By working together to see how BEST we can help, make a difference and solve problems.'
