Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The people I work with'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'I feel it'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I enjoy working with elderly people. We recently cared for my elderly aunt in our home before she passed away. I got a lot of understanding about caring for someone who cannot get around without help. Through everything she remained pleasant and even had a sense of humor at times. She ultimately ended up at Copper Trace where I worked and I got to pop in on her all the time. There were many things I was not able to do for her any longer because I was just a dietary aide and I wasn't able to help her the way I could when she was at home with us because of the rules. The staff who worked with her were very knowledgeable and knew exactly how to move her and help her. I want to be able to help someone in that way.'

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'When we had my aunt at home, my mom set up shifts for us kids because my aunt needed 24 hour care. My mom would need breaks to do errands and such. I helped as often as I could. It provided not only help for my aunt but it was a needed break for my mom.'

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'Both my mom and dad are special people. I am adopted and so are my 2 brothers. We were adopted from Bulgaria as toddlers. My parents also took in several other children from time to time who had no one to care for them. My parents have been married for 23 years and have a great love for family. We are all grown now but they continue to help put several children through college. I currently live with 2 of my "sisters" in a home in Fishers. Both my "sisters" are in nursing school. I learned from my parents that every person counts and deserves to be loved.'

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'I remember my mom asking me to help her go to the grocery store and get groceries for a family that had nothing to eat on more than one occasion. I remember wrapping Christmas presents for a family that we helped get through Christmas after their father had gotten ill. I think all of this was impactful to me because my parents taught me more from their examples. Even to this day, my mom will call me and ask me to work the food pantry with her on Fridays.'

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'By allowing me to work with people who I can help in such a way that they look forward to my visits. I want to love to go to work!'
