Applicant's Story

Regarding your work experience, what's most appealing to you?

'The purpose of my work'

When do you know you've done a good job?

'The people I work with tell me'

Why are you a caregiver... or want to become one?

'I like to organize and clean, care with compassion for people, and help them with their needs. I want to leave having made a positive impact on them and their life is some way if possible. '

Tell me of a time when you were there for someone who really needed you.

'Recently, my friend who struggles with depression/anxiety was alone and isolated where she lives and I-not being able to drive-had someone drive me out 2 hours away to pick her up and bring her to stay with me. It made her feel better and gave her a break from her hostile environment. Another time was community service in a nursing home I did at my school. And taking care of my diabetic grandmother and a live-in caregiver. Washing her, cleaning the apartment, helping her with cooking or lifting things, and giving companionship. '

Think of the person who was most meaningful to you growing up. What made them special to you?

'My grandmother was the one who raised me and had a large impact on how I treat people and how I expect them to treat me. My Aunt was also a selfless person who always had a positive outlook on life that I aspire to. '

Please share one or two memories that you had with that person.

'My grandmother would give selflessly sometimes running a hole in her pocket and never expected anyone to pay her back. And she'd leave money in my purse at random times. We'd play cards with our friend upstairs and eat junkfood late at night together. My Aunt got sick and was dying and was loved by many people who came to see her to make her feel better. But when they came to visit and cheer her up, they always left with her being the one who did the cheering. '

How can I help create a supportive and positive work experience for you?

'I have a slight learning disability but I do catch on quick. Just patience and positive reinforcement-not that I need cradled or anything but-that will go along way I guess. I already feel like part of the family, so friendships help and I already feel like I'm not lacking there.'
